AI In The News
As of the date of this article, we have a few experts weighing in on the matter of AI, where it is, and where it is going. I’m planning on periodically posting links to articles and sharing any observations I might have.
Bill Gates (Formerly Microsoft)
Bill Gates suggests we really need to focus on the entry-level blue-collar jobs where “$20-an-hour workers” are being replaced by “$10-an-hour robots”. The article goes on to state that humans will indeed be given the pink slip. He’s also warning that the transition could move faster than society is ready for. Bill is calling this a critical time where the choice we make will make or break the disruption that AI causes. Quote: “We need time to prepare for the period of social, political, and economic upheaval we are about to enter.”
Author’s Comments:
Bill is absolutely right when he says that we need to prepare for the evolution of a digitally super-intelligent society. We have to start forward-thinking and prepare for a real shift in the nature of the workforce.
Jensen Huang (Nvidia CEO)
Jensen Huang ultimately challenges Bill Gates, saying that AI will change jobs, not end work. He suggests that while jobs will disappear, those jobs will be replaced with new ones. Jensen shares a much more optimistic perception of how AI will transform the world. The article goes on to state that Jensen believes that skilled trades are what will be in high demand. “Everybody’s job changes”. “Some Jobs will be eliminated. Many new jobs will be created. If you go back and look at history and technology, revolutionary technology comes along, incredible advances come along.”
Author’s Comments:
There are people who are scared of AI and people who are optimistic. As a top-of-the-food-chain tech CEO, it’s easy to say that the rest of the world should prepare and become proficient in skilled trades. As Bill Gates has suggested in his article, this will be a shock to the blue-collar workforce.
Andrew Bailey (FSB Chair)
Andrew Bailey, the Financial Stability Board Chair, has concerns about how various aspects of the advancement of AI will impact the world. He’s concerned about the “volatility” of the world markets. AI could ultimately cause a global economic downturn, he suggests in the article. AI can manipulate markets with its popularity bubble and through self-made hacking to accomplish tasks being written. “This summer has seen OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta all reveal their AI tools doing things they should not, with some AI agents going so far as to impersonate real people to get past security hurdles.”
Author’s Comments:
We absolutely need to build governance around AI relative to the security and availability of advanced models. We are all new to this, and we’re building at a pace that supersedes our understanding of what this superintelligence can do.
Mark Cuban (Entrepreneur)
Mark Cuban believes in AI and has stated that businesses that don’t learn to adapt will close their doors. The biggest point he’s been making in the news lately is the overspending on data centers by venture capitalists. He suggests that the AI boom isn’t as extreme as the internet bubble, but there is a lot of risk being taken on investments. The biggest risk is the advancement of technology. Building out a long-term plan based on tech or near-term tech is something being overlooked. Cuban suggests that tech breakthroughs will make AI cheaper and more power-efficient as it becomes more ingrained into culture.
Author’s Comments:
Mark is a guy who really seems to be for the people. He has a large vision compared to most of the tech guys on this list. Or at least he shares more and dives deeper into the details. I love what he’s doing what he can to help Americans with drug prices with his company, Cost Plus Drugs. He also wants to help solve wealth inequality. He’s suggesting that employers choose between paying higher taxes or giving staff company stock. He himself awarded 330 employees at Broadcast.com stock, ahead of Yahoo’s $5.7 billion acquisition that resulted in 300 employees becoming millionaires. Source: Yahoo Finance
Vishen Lakhiani (Founder of Mindvalley)
I don’t really know who this guy is and may have well ended up in my feed through some sort of social marketing, but the statistics listed in his article are believable.
Author’s Comments:
“In just 5 years, AI, as it is today, will be 1,000,000 X more powerful.” That’s a shocking statistic given the recent exposure of the Hugging Face incident. It’s also being said that Hugging Face is only part of the story and that OpenAI was also hacked internally. The details of the actions take by AI is mind boggling. Not because of what it did, but the unknown why and more importantly, the success that it had in doing so. The capability and capacity of the methods AIs used to complete the hack, is beyond human capacity.
